Delhi-NCR continues to experience a severe cold wave, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an ‘orange alert’ due to persistent dense fog conditions. On Saturday, the mercury dipped to 8.5 degrees Celsius, slightly higher than the seasonal average. The IMD has predicted that these dense fog conditions will likely prevail on January 22 and January 23, significantly impacting visibility and daily activities.

Despite no reports of dense fog at the Indira Gandhi International Airport during the night, other regions like Ambala in Haryana and parts of Delhi reported low visibility, measuring 200 meters in Ambala, 500 meters in Hissar and Safdarjung, and 1100 meters in Palam. This reduced visibility has led to considerable disruptions in rail and air travel. Approximately 11 trains bound for Delhi, including the Khajuraho-Kurushetra Express and Ambedkarnagar-Katra, experienced delays. Flight operations at Delhi’s airport also faced delays and cancellations.

IMD Forecast and Train Delays

The IMD’s forecast suggests that the cold wave is expected to ease slightly after January 25, with temperatures ranging between 6 to 20 degrees Celsius. On Friday, visibility dropped to as low as 50 meters at 5:30 am in isolated regions across several states, including Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh. This foggy weather has also affected train schedules, with 22 Delhi-bound trains running behind schedule. Notable delays of around 6 to 6.5 hours were reported for trains like the Khajaurao-Kurukshetra Express and the Hyderabad-New Delhi Express.
