The IMD has extended its alert to cover the states of Punjab, Haryana, and Chandigarh, with severe cold wave conditions anticipated until January 14. An orange alert, indicating the severity of the cold wave, has been issued for North India, urging residents to take necessary precautions and stay updated on the evolving weather conditions.
Delhi’s Weather Forecast:
On Saturday, January 13, Delhi is expected to experience a partly cloudy sky with dense fog in the morning. The maximum temperature is predicted to reach 19°C, while the minimum temperature is forecasted to plummet to 5°C. Gurgaon and Faridabad remain under an orange alert, while the rest of Delhi, excluding Gautam Buddh Nagar and Ghaziabad, is under a yellow alert.
Transportation Disruptions:
The severe cold wave has disrupted transportation services in and out of Delhi. Indira Gandhi International Airport experienced delays in flight operations as the morning temperature dipped to 7°C. Dense fog on the runway, while not impacting flight visibility significantly, contributed to delays.
Train services were also affected, with several trains delayed in reaching Delhi. The Mumbai CSMT-Amritsar Express faced a 4-hour delay, and other trains, including Dakshin Express, Malwa Express, Khajuraho-Kurukshetra Express, Swaraj Express, Grand Trunk Express, Mangala Lakshadweep Express, and New Delhi Indore Intercity Express, reported delays.
Temperature Anomalies:
Minimum temperatures across most parts of Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi have remained in the range of 3-7°C in recent days. On Friday, the Safdarjung observatory recorded a minimum temperature of 3.9°C, 3.5 degrees below normal. Meanwhile, the Lodhi Road observatory registered temperatures at 3.6°C, 2.4 degrees below normal.
IMD’s Prediction:
The IMD foresees a gradual fall of 2-3°C in minimum temperatures over many parts of Central and East India over the next three days. This highlights the widespread impact of the winter weather, emphasizing the need for residents to take necessary precautions to stay warm and safe.
