IPS Shweta K Sugathan Trailblazer’s Journey:

IPS officer Shweta K Sugathan, a native of Kerala, has been chosen to lead the all-women contingent during the Republic Day parade, a role that she had also undertaken for the mixed-gender contingent last year. Sugathan, who assumed the charge as Additional DCP-II North District of Delhi Police in October the previous year, has a remarkable track record. Graduating with a Bachelor’s in Technology in 2015, she previously served as the Assistant Commissioner of Police in Chanakyapuri in 2019.

Historical Significance:

IPS Shweta K Sugathan

The decision to have an all-women contingent for the Republic Day parade is a monumental step towards promoting gender equality and recognizing the contributions of women in the police force. Shweta K Sugathan, by leading this contingent, follows in the footsteps of Kiran Bedi, who, in 1975, became the first woman to command the pack after Delhi Police first marched down the Kartavya Path in 1955. Sugathan’s leadership represents a momentous occasion, almost five decades later, and underscores the commitment to breaking gender barriers within the force.

Delhi Police’s Legacy on Kartavya Path:

Since its inception in 1955, the Delhi Police has been a prominent participant in the Republic Day parade, receiving the Best Marching Contingent award 40 times. Kiran Bedi’s historic leadership in 1975 marked a significant milestone, and now, Shweta K Sugathan will continue this legacy by leading 194 female head constables and constables during the 75th Republic Day parade.

Excitement and Anticipation:

With 80% of the participants from the northeastern states, the all-women contingent exemplifies the Delhi Police’s commitment to inclusivity and bridging gaps within the force. Special Commissioner of Police (Armed Police) Robin Hibu shared that all members of the contingent are “very excited” to participate in the parade for the first time. Additionally, the women’s pipe band, led by constable Ruyangunuo Kense, adds another feather to Delhi Police’s cap, highlighting the progressive steps taken for gender inclusivity.
