The consequence of this sudden downpour was immediate and impactful. Road blockages ensued, leading to widespread waterlogging, thereby intensifying the challenges faced by Delhiites already grappling with the harsh winter conditions. The heavy rainshowers also disrupted the normal functioning of train services, causing delays and inconvenience for commuters.
Weather Update Delhi NCR
The IMD, in its alert, highlighted the occurrence of a thunderstorm with light to moderate intensity rain across various areas of Delhi and NCR. Specifically, the Met Department identified areas prone to the thunderstorm, including Narela, Alipur, Vivek Vihar, Jafarpur, Nazafgarh, Palam, Safdarjung, Lodi Road, and Mahrauli in Delhi. In the NCR, locations like Loni Dehat, Hindon AF Station, Bahadurgarh, Ghaziabad, Indirapuram, Chhapraula, Noida, Dadri, and Greater Noida were expected to experience similar weather conditions.
Extended Impact on North India
The ripple effect of this weather system extended beyond the Delhi-NCR region, with the Met Department forecasting similar weather conditions over parts of Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Rajasthan. Additionally, the IMD predicted the possibility of hailstorms and precipitation in and around Delhi-NCR, Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, and Rajasthan.
Regional Forecast and Cold Wave Conditions
The IMD’s forecast extended to February 1, anticipating light or moderate scattered to fairly widespread rainfall over Punjab, Chandigarh, Haryana, and Delhi. Encouragingly, the forecast dispelled concerns of cold wave conditions prevailing over any part of India for the next five days.
Western Himalayas Experience Rain and Snowfall
Notably, regions in the western Himalayas, including Jammu, Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, were not spared from the unexpected weather upheaval. Satellite imagery indicated ongoing rain and snowfall in these areas, expected to persist through the night and morning hours.
AccuWeather’s Perspective
AccuWeather’s forecast aligned with the IMD’s predictions, suggesting that the region might continue to experience showers until late Saturday. Furthermore, there is a possibility of the temperature dropping to 9 degrees Celsius, creating a colder environment. The previous day saw the maximum temperature in the national capital region plummet to 18.6 degrees Celsius, marking a deviation of four degrees below the season’s normal. The IMD also anticipates thunderstorms and winds with speeds ranging from 30-40 kmph during the night.
