The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a weather alert for January 17, signaling the likelihood of hailstorms in five north-eastern states, including Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, and Sikkim. This prediction comes amidst a period of challenging weather conditions across the country.

Latest Weather Forecast for North-Eastern States
In Assam, the Regional Meteorological Centre in Guwahati has highlighted the possibility of hailstorms in ten districts: Morigaon, Nagaon, Sonitpur, Biswanath, Lakhimpur, Sivasagar, Dhemaji, Charaideo, Dibrugarh, and Tinsukia. These districts, along with several others, have recently experienced dense fog, impacting visibility and daily activities.
Rainfall Predictions for West Bengal and Northern States
The IMD has also forecasted rainfall in West Bengal starting January 17. Light rain is expected in the southern districts from Wednesday to Friday. Conversely, the northern districts are likely to witness light to moderate rain during the same period.
Further north, the IMD predicts light rainfall and snowfall in Jammu-Kashmir, Ladakh, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand on January 17.
Weather Conditions in the South-Eastern Peninsula and Other States
The forecast for the south-eastern peninsula, including Bihar, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, and Rajasthan, indicates light to moderate rainfall on January 17 and 18.
Dense fog conditions have been a significant concern in states like Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Sikkim, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Himachal Pradesh, Odisha, and Jammu and Kashmir. This fog is expected to persist in the coming days.
Cold Wave in Delhi
Delhi experienced a cold day with the minimum temperature dropping to 4 degrees Celsius. IMD Scientist Soma Sen commented on the situation, saying, “In Delhi and North India, we are not expecting much change in the minimum temperature. Perhaps a one-degree rise due to sunny skies, but foggy conditions will continue.” She further noted that the neighboring regions might continue to experience low cloud conditions, which could result in intense cold day scenarios in Haryana and Punjab over the next two to three days.
