In a recent turn of events, the Delhi government has reversed its directive regarding the extension of the winter vacation in schools across the national capital. The decision, which initially extended the winter break, was promptly withdrawn by the Department of Education, citing a mistake in its issuance. The authorities clarified that a final decision on the matter is expected to be reached by January 8.

The revised order, stated as “Order No.DE.23(3)/Sch.Br./2024/18 dated: January 6, 2024,” regarding the extension of the winter vacation, stands withdrawn with immediate effect. The Department of Education assured that further instructions on this matter would be issued in due course.

The Arvind Kejriwal government, in its previous order, had extended the winter break until January 10 for all government-aided and unaided recognized private schools in the national capital territory (NCT). This extension was attributed to the prevailing extreme cold waves and the Indian Meteorological Department’s yellow alert.

On January 6, overcast and foggy conditions blanketed Delhi, affecting daily life. The highest temperature during the day was recorded at 15.2 degrees Celsius, with the early morning low standing at 8.9 degrees. These adverse weather conditions prompted concerns about the safety and well-being of students, leading to the decision to extend the winter break.

Cold conditions had earlier gripped Delhi as the national capital recorded a minimum temperature of 8.3 degrees Celsius on January 2, just above the normal range. Prior to this, Delhi had experienced a minimum of 6 degrees Celsius, as reported by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

According to the Regional Weather Forecasting Centre (RWFC) Delhi, dense to very dense fog at isolated places and cold day to severe cold day conditions were predicted at a few places in Haryana, Chandigarh, and Delhi till January 7. These weather conditions further supported the decision to reconsider and adjust the duration of the winter break in schools.

In a proactive measure, the Delhi government had initially announced an early winter break in schools in November, spanning from the 9th to the 18th, citing severe air pollution levels. This step was taken to ensure the safety and health of students in the face of deteriorating air quality.
